From Adam Vallance, owner of PRSK:
In 2009, I received an email from guests looking for a truly awesome and unique sea kayak adventure - something that captured a little of everything we offer - and then some.
Enticing them into my world, I described features from Toba Inlet, such as the remote pocket beaches and rainforest shrouded Coastal Mountains towering thousands of feet above the ocean. We talked about the maze of waterways winding through the Discovery Islands and the awesome power of the tidal rapids squeezing through narrow passages. Desolation Sound was discussed, as to access the Discovery Islands or Coast Mountain waterways, one must pass through Desolation. We lingered in Desolation and talked about its unusually warm waters, the colourful and abundant intertidal marine life and cool activities such as snorkeling and night paddling with the sparkling bioluminescence. My past experiences in these areas caused my imagination to run wild with potential ideas of exploration and adventure.
They had 10 days - and the adventure grew as we continued to discuss routes that included hidden lagoons, crushing waterfalls, coastal bird sanctuaries and secluded sandy beaches. They booked the tour - and out of this was born The Epic Kayak Adventure.
What is the Epic Kayak Adventure?
As the name suggests, this tour surpasses the ordinary in both duration and experience.
Powell River Sea Kayak is located at the end of the road on the northern Sunshine Coast of British Columbia. To access most of the areas described above, you have to go by water - or floatplane. For some areas, such as Desolation Sound, one can launch a kayak, experience Desolation, and return by kayak within a reasonable time period (eg: 4-6 days). However, the further you go, the more difficult it is to either return within a reasonable time period, or, to see many of the key features on a particular route.
For Powell River Sea Kayak's Into the Majestic Mountains tour, where we paddle deeper into the Coast Mountains, we overcome the time/distance factor by having a motor vessel pick up the group for a return ride home on the last day. Even then, this tour operates as a 5, 6 or 7 day tour.
This brings us to why the Epic Tour surpasses the ordinary. Ten days allows us to access areas not typically experienced on a shorter trip. Not only can you go further, there is time to explore and experience the many features along the way. This may include waiting for a higher tide in order to access a lagoon, catching slack tide to gain passage through a tidal rapid or altering course for a remote island bird sanctuary. There is time for flexible adventure, where weather and group dynamic are the only limiting factors. After 10 days, the immersion into coastal British Columbia will be etched into your memory, in a way that far surpasses an ordinary kayak trip.
