Powell River Sea Kayak: Tour to Jedediah Island

Sea Kayak Tours to Jedediah Island, British Columbia, Canada.

Jedediah Island

Jedediah Island is a 640 acre island paradise. Located between the southern tip of Texada Island and Lasqueti Island, it is certainly off the beaten path. It has only been a Class A Provincial Marine Park since 1995 - perhaps part of the reason why Jedediah is not one of the better known destinations. Don't let this dissuade you! Jedediah Island is a wonderful kayaking and historical experience. With several islands and islets, including Lasqueti and Texada Islands, surrounding Jedediah, meandering exploration includes much, much more than Jedediah Island. As well, it's location in the Straight of Georgia provides expansive views both of the rising sun to the southeast and the setting sun to the northwest. Sandy beaches and quiet coves welcome the paddlers to the shores of Jedediah as well as the idyllic islands and islets that surround Jedediah.

Now the history! Paddling around Jedediah IslandIf you like to feel what it would have been like to live on this coast in the late 19th century and early 20th century - this is it! The island still has the old homestead and out buildings. Paths carve their way around the island - providing excellent access to experience the island's nature throughout. Offspring of the original goats and sheep still roam the island. There is even a book written about Jedediah Island. Jedediah Days - One Woman's Island Paradise was written by Mary Palmer - who bought Jedediah Island in 1949 and lived their until 1992.

Click "Destinations and Jedediah Island" for more information, or, pick up a copy of Jedediah Days (available through Harbour Publishing).

For this tour, Powell River Sea Kayak launches from Texada Island - an experience in itself! Texada is the largest island in the Straight of Georgia. It's western shoreline (which is what we paddle) is open to the Straight of Georgia. Few people paddle this shoreline - very few. StarfishWe view this as an asset - and certainly a unique paddling experience. The exposure to the Straight provides a wonderful feeling of freedom as we paddle south along the shores of Texada. The shoreline itself provides wonderful bays and coves to poke in and out of. Interesting rock formations and large pebbly beaches are common along this exposed coastline as are Harbour Seals and other larger mammals.
